Guled Sharif
Guled Sharif is an MD candidate at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, aiming to pursue an MBA through the University at Buffalo’s dual MD/MBA program. A Buffalo native and first-generation college student, Guled is committed to transforming healthcare through innovation, equity, and strategic leadership. His journey reflects a deep-rooted dedication to uplifting the population here in WNY, whilst building and maintaining a sustainable healthcare system in his hometown.
Guled earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University at Buffalo, graduating with honors. Throughout his college years, he demonstrated a strong commitment to student leadership, serving as Vice President of the UB MSA, a board member of MPAC, and the first TA in a graduate pharmacology course. In these roles, he led efforts to cultivate a more inclusive environment and promote educational access for students from all backgrounds.
His passion for innovation took shape early. In 2018, he placed second at the New York State STEP Conference, presenting a model robotic system designed for surgical applications. This project ignited his interest in medical technology, which he later explored through research in robotic surgery under Dr. Khurshid Guru at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center with ATLAS. There, Guled observed firsthand the impact of cutting-edge tools like the da Vinci robot on patient care and outcomes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Guled worked under Clinical Administrator JuYi Banchich at Roswell Park’s financial department, where he learned the complexities of healthcare budgeting and hospital operations amid a global crisis. At the same time, he supported frontline staff in managing laboratory specimens, gaining valuable insight into healthcare delivery under emergency conditions.
Having volunteered extensively at organizations such as Jericho Road Community Health Center, VIVE, Buffalo General Hospital, UB Medical Step, and HEAL International, these experiences have inspired Guled to found H.E.M.E., Helping Enrich Medical Exploration,, a nonprofit that provides mentorship and early exposure to healthcare careers for underrepresented students in Buffalo. Through mentorship roles such as at the UB Medical Step Program under Dr. David Milling, he continues to support the next generation of healthcare professionals and has served as a keynote speaker for the university.
Additionally Guled has had the privilege of working closely with the exemplary physicians at UBMD including Dr. Deepa K. Gosine and Dr. Andrea Manyon, President and CEO of UBMD Primary Care. Under their mentorship, he deepened his understanding of holistic, community-centered care while learning how to lead effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare setting.
Guled is determined to open a robotic surgery clinic in Buffalo, while also providing consulting services to new clinics navigating healthcare business systems, and leveraging a dual MD/MBA training to drive equity-focused reform. Whether mentoring youth, conducting research, or contributing to policy change, Guled remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure through innovation, compassion, and responsive leadership here in WNY.
